 Dr. Cain Hope Felder helps to make Council's Haney Conference a Success! The Council of Baptist Pastor's Annual William R. Haney Education Conference was held on Tuesday October 13, 2009 at 10:30 p.m. The event was an overwhelming success and was heavily attended. " This was designed to be a very productive and informative conference" remarked Dr. Edward R. Knox, Institute and Education Committee Chairperson. After a lecture delivered by Dr. Knox, a panel discussion was held on the issue of domestic violence. The theme of the discussion was "What every Pastor should know about domestic violence". The discussion was anchored by Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Eric Cholak. Other members of the panel featured were Dr. Keith Whitney, Dr. John Duckworth, and Rev. Audrey Turner. Panelists reflected on both personal and professional experiences with domestic violence. The Order of the Day was from the world renown Professor, Theologian, Author, and Biblical Scholar; Dr. Cain Hope Felder. Dr. Felder delivered a stunning sermon on the need for preachers around the country to embrace their prophetic duty as members of the cloth. He urged the clergy to rally in unity and to peacefully demonstrate before the halls of congress and the White House to insure the needs of the poor are not forsaken. "The time to act is now" urged Dr. Felder during a sermon which had listeners shouting support from their seats. The event culminated with a luncheon and private reception with Dr. Felder where he shared his reflections on politics, community, and religion. The Haney institute is named for the Rev. Dr. William Riley Haney. Dr. Haney was a dedicated Pastor and teacher with a passion for education as a prerequisite to entering the clergy. Dr. Haney Pastored many years at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Detroit Michigan. Dr. Haney also was an ardent supporter of social justice and change. He made his transition to glory on August 27, 1985. Several years later, the Council established the Haney Institute in recognition of his memory and legacy of service to the community. |
